The Kitchen: The Rule Beginners Usually Get Wrong
The kitchen is one of the most misunderstood parts of pickleball. The good news is that the basic rule is actually quite simple once you understand what a volley is.

The most important thing to know
You are allowed to stand in the kitchen.
The restriction is about volleying.
A lot of beginners are told to “stay out of the kitchen”, which can make it sound like you are never allowed to step into it.
That is not the rule.
First, what is a volley?
A volley is when you hit the ball before it bounces.
So:
Ball hasn’t bounced → you hit it → that’s a volley.
If the ball bounces first, you are no longer volleying.
That distinction is the key to understanding the kitchen.

The kitchen rule, simply explained
You cannot volley the ball while:
• standing inside the kitchen
• touching the kitchen line
• touching the kitchen with any part of your body
There is one more important part.
If you volley the ball from outside the kitchen and your momentum carries you into the kitchen afterwards, that is also a fault.
So it is not just about where you are when you hit the ball. You also need to stay in control after the volley.
Myth vs reality
Myth
“You’re not allowed in the kitchen.”
Reality
You can absolutely step into the kitchen.
If the ball bounces in the kitchen, you can step in and hit it.
You can also stand in the kitchen when you are not volleying.
The restriction only applies when you are hitting the ball before it bounces.
Legal or fault?
Here are a few common situations.
Stand behind the kitchen line and volley
Legal.
You are outside the kitchen when you hit the volley.
Your toe is touching the kitchen line when you volley
Fault.
The kitchen line is considered part of the kitchen.
You volley from outside the kitchen, then your momentum carries you in
Fault.
You need to stay clear of the kitchen after the volley as well.
The ball bounces in the kitchen, then you step in and hit it
Legal.
Once the ball has bounced, you can step into the kitchen to play it.
You are standing in the kitchen and the ball bounces before you hit it
Legal.
You are not volleying, so there is no kitchen fault.
Good to know
After playing a bounced ball from inside the kitchen, players will often move back outside the kitchen line.
That is usually good positioning because it gets you ready to attack the next ball near the net.
But it is coaching advice, not a rule that says you must immediately leave the kitchen.
Remember
Bounce? You can step in.
Volley? Stay clear.
Kitchen line = kitchen.
That is the simplest way to think about it when you are starting out.
Quick check
Can you stand in the kitchen?
Yes.
Can you volley while your foot is touching the kitchen line?
No.
If you understand those two things, you already understand the most important part of the kitchen rule.
Want to practise this on court?
The kitchen rule makes a lot more sense once you start seeing it happen during real points.
